Printer Exorcisms (How to stop 50 blank pages)
Printers run on fear and malicious compliance. When your printer refuses to print or spits out endless blank pages:
- Cancel the storm: Open Windows Settings → Printers → Click your printer → Open Print Queue → Click Printer in menu → Cancel All Documents.
- The Power Yank: Turn the printer off, yank the physical power cord from the wall for 30 seconds, and plug it back in. This clears its tiny internal memory.
- If it's on Wi-Fi: Make sure your computer didn't accidentally connect to the neighbor's "Guest Wi-Fi" network.
The Mute Switch of Shame (Why Zoom can't hear you)
If people on your video call are doing the frantic "You're on mute!" mime:
- The Hardware Switch: Check your physical headset cord or microphone body. 9 times out of 10, there is a tiny physical slider switch flipped to red.
- Browser Permissions: Look at the address bar right next to the website URL. Click the little padlock/settings icon and ensure "Microphone" is set to Allow.
- Default Device: In Windows sound settings, ensure your headset is selected as the Default Communication Device, not the built-in monitor speakers.
Is This Email a Scam? (The 5-Second Sanity Check)
If you get an email saying your Geek Squad, Amazon, or Netflix account was charged $499:
- Check the actual sender address: Click the sender's name to expand it. If "Geek Squad" has an email address like
support@random-domain-123.xyz, it's 100% fake. - Never call the phone number in the email: They want you to call so they can ask for remote access to your bank.
- Never buy gift cards: No legitimate company or government agency ever asks to be paid in Apple or Target gift cards.
Wi-Fi vs. Physics (Why the signal drops in the basement)
Wi-Fi waves hate three things: metal, brick walls, and active microwaves.
- Don't hide the router in a closet: Keep the router elevated on a desk or shelf in the open, not buried inside a wooden entertainment cabinet.
- 5 GHz vs 2.4 GHz: 5 GHz is blazing fast but doesn't pass through walls well. 2.4 GHz is slower but reaches the back patio.
